The design I use for Petronella works wonderfully for the Irish move called “House”. You “house around” at the end of many sets. So here is a version of that same design, but called HOUSE.
The Irish crowd also uses a swing, and a move that is similar to square dancing’s “grand right and left”. So watch for that design in the future, you Irish fans!
If you’d like a patch, contact me. They cost $8, plus shipping. Each one has a fusible on the back, to hold it in place while you SEW it onto a garment or bag.
#1) Sung to the tune “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”
Circlin’ around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas contra dance
Runes are hung where you can see
Every couple starts to prance
Circlin’ around the Christmas tree
Let the contra spirit ring
Perhaps later on, you’ll dance with me
Or just go caroling
You will get a sentimental feeling when you dance,
Spin around, clap your hands
Petronella with every fella
Circlin’ around the Christmas tree,
Have a happy holiday,
Everyone swinging merrily
In the new old contra way…
You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear,
Someone shouting, “Ho-Ho-Ho,
Here we go in a do-si-do.”
Circlin’ around the Christmas tree,
Have a happy holiday,
Everyone swinging merrily
In the new old contra way…

#2) Christmas Season Contra Dance (sung to the tune “Blue Christmas”)
Play it here as an mp3: Christmas Season Contra Dance Blue Xmas tune
I’ll have a mer – ry Christmas dancing with you
We’ll be so mer – ry, dancing together
Decorations of runes, up and down the hall
We’ll be so merry, when in my arms you fall
Up on the stage, the caller is calling
New lines of four, down the hall, are progressing
Circle up, ladies chain, and then a do-si-do
Is not enough dear, if we don’t dance some more
But when the band starts playing the last tune
We’ll feel the dance is over – way too soon
But we’ll do it again — see you next week
Until then, have a so, mer – ry Christmas
But we’ll do it again — see you next week
Until then, have a so, mer – ry Christmas

#3) 12 Runes of Christmas
On the first day of Christmas,
my true love danced with me
A promenade around the ring.
12 Twelve balanced swings,
11 Eleven petronellas,
10 Ten allemands,
9 Nine box-the-gnats,
8 Eight right-and-left-throughs,
7 Seven hey-for-fours,
6 Six contra corners,
5 Five do-si-dos,
4 Four circle lefts,
3 Three right hand stars
2 Two ladies chains,
And a promenade around the ring.
(and I’m SO-O-O dizzy!!)
I am having just SO MUCH FUN embroidering patches! The rayon thread produces a lovely sheen, and I have a variety of background colors. There are even variegated threads that change colors as they go along.
The designs we offer are:
Balance and Swing (2 patches), Do Si D, Do Si Do with Twirls, Gypsy, Hey for Four, Ladies Chain and Petronella. A few have been featured in earlier posts, and here are three new patches. They are 4″ x 3″, with a fusible on the back, and they cost $8, plus shipping. Contact us if you are interested in owning one!
